Traditional Apache music is generally passed down from generation to generation. Traditional Apache music consists of singing in the native Apache language, usually with a traditional Apache drum. Certain traditional songs have to be sung only during certain seasons of the year or for special purposes and ceremonies. These songs have much significance and reverence to the Apache people. As oppose to Contemporary Apache songs, which is fairly new and partly sung in the English language. These songs are mainly social songs that are part of social/family gatherings in which everyone can participate and learn the songs.
The primary instrument used when singing Apache songs is the drum. The drum is handmade with a leather surface and the bottom half of the drum is metal. The drumstick is also handmade with a loop at the end of the stick to resonate the sound of the drum.
